An expedition cruise is a bit like an iceberg. The most spectacular part, and the smallest one, is above the surface: breaching whales, bears, icebergs, landscapes and so on. Just like an iceberg, a good expedition product has a much larger part that is usually not shown.
On board Swan Hellenic, I saw plenty worth showing off: architecture and thoughtful interiors, comfortable cabins, outstanding cuisine, service and wellness — everything guests themselves noted during the journey. Time on board is a substantial part of an expedition journey, not simply something to endure between interesting destinations.
A comfortable bed or a good dinner is unlikely to outshine a whale breaching from the water. But that is exactly what happens to a passenger while the ship is making its way to those remote destinations they came for. When choosing a cruise, people inevitably compare several companies. The destinations offered by many of them can look quite similar. The ships, however, are all different. So when choosing between several options, images like these can help a client remember a particular company — and choose it.
For my Swan Hellenic expedition cruise photography project, I wanted to show both sides of the product: the spectacular remote destinations — and what makes this particular company special to the client.
